About Tjelta
Tjelta
"I really wanted to design a simple structure influenced by my Scandinavian heritage, the California weather, light, and the beautiful surroundings of Mammoth."
- Paul Steelman
The Name
This luxury home is named Tjelta after the world-renowned architect Paul Steelman's grandmother. Tjelta was the middle name and birthplace of his Scandinavian grandmother, Inga Tjelta Andreasson. Inga was born and lived in Tjelta, Norway, a small village near the southern coast of Norway, until she immigrated to the United States in 1915. Mr. Steelman's inspiration came from his Scandinavian heritage and he wanted to pay tribute to his grandmother's legacy by naming this home “Tjelta” after her.
The House
After a year of looking, Mr. Steelman found a perfect site for this home on a quiet street, surrounded by trees, and bordered the Sierra Star Golf Course. The house was designed to keep all the main living areas on a single level for the ease of visitors. For this reason the main level features three master bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, an additional powder room, office, living room, dining room, kitchen and pantry. Guests are also able to unload their vehicle on the same level as the main entryway. The basement level includes two additional rooms with bunk beds, bathroom, game room, laundry room, garage, and storage area. The promenade was designed to connect the front drive to the wilderness at the back of the house. The home features a grand ceiling with clerestory windows which creates a golden sunlit promenade during the day.
